Phentermine vs Duromine

Phentermine – is a sympathomimetic amine, which has been used as an adjunct in treatment of obesity since 1959. This substance is not included in drug composition in pure form. At the pharmaceutical market, Phentermine is contained in many drugs in the form of ion-exchange resin or hydrochloride.

One of the sustained-release drugs containing Phentermine as ion-exchange resin is Duromine. This effective means to get rid of excess fat is manufactured by iNova since 1991. This medication represents opaque capsules that contain 15 mg, 30 mg or 40 mg of Phentermine as ion-exchange resin.

Phentermine is also available as tablets or capsules containing 37.5 mg of this substance as a hydrochloride. The main difference between Duromine and medicines containing Phentermine hydrochloride is in the rate of active ingredient release and duration of pharmacological action of the drug.

Phentermine as ion-exchange resin contained in Duromine capsules is dissolved and is almost completely absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract. The process of Phentermine release from resin may take 14 hours. Accordingly, anorectic effect of this drug also lasts longer.

Tablets or capsules that contain Phentermine as hydrochloride dissolve quickly. Therefore, in their use, release of the active ingredient occurs much faster than during Duromine use. Usual time of absorption of Phentermine as hydrochloride in the gastrointestinal tract is 2 to 10 minutes.

After Duromine intake, the maximum density of the active substance in blood plasma is usually less than that after using drugs containing Phentermine hydrochloride at the same dosage. Duromine has the same pharmacological effect as medicines containing Phentermine hydrochloride.

By affecting the patient’s central nervous system, in particular dopaminergic and noradrenergic systems, this drug suppresses appetite. In combination with therapeutic diet and exercise, such action of the drug helps to get rid of excess fat.

Tablets and capsules containing Phentermine, as well as Duromine are mainly prescribed to patients whose body mass index is greater than or equal to 30 kg / m2. In people with less BMI, these drugs may cause undesirable effects. Patients with BMI less than 30 kg / m2 are prescribed with these drugs very rarely, only in case of risk of hypertension or other concomitant diseases.

Adult patients are recommended to use Duromine 30 mg once a day regardless of eating. The daily dose of Phentermine hydrochloride is 37.5 mg per day taken in one or two steps before food or two hours after food intake. Elderly people and children under 12 years old are not recommended to use Duromine and other drugs containing Phentermine.

Drugs that include Phentermine, as well as Duromine have the same contraindications. For example, these drugs should not be used in patients who are allergic to Phentermine or suffer from cardiovascular diseases. They may also cause the same adverse events.

Most often, this substance causes rash, tachycardia, insomnia, headache, or hypertension. Peak concentration of Phentermine as hydrochloride in the blood plasma is higher than that of Duromine. Therefore, the intensity and the frequency of Duromine side effects can be lower.
